Regular, full-time, 12-month position

The Geology Department Technician supports the Department's basic educational and research missions. Ideal applicants should have a Master's degree in geology or earth science (or the equivalent combination of education and relevant experience); strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills; and, a willingness to cheerfully and independently tackle new challenges as they arise. The ability to work congenially with co-workers in an academic setting is essential. Aptitude for mechanical and computing tasks is desirable, and attention to the safe use and care of equipment and facilities is vital.

The Technician is directly responsible for
oversight and upkeep of the Department's field, analytical (e.g. XRD, XRF) and computing equipment; working independently and with college staff and other parties as necessary to maintain the Department's equipment, vehicle, and physical facilities; helping to organize and maintain map and sample collections; assisting faculty and students with classroom and research activities; and field trip preparation as well as field trip participation, including driving for single and multi-day excursions, as needed. Infrequently, other assistance outside of normal business hours may be required. Since this position involves transportation and lifting of heavy laboratory specimens, field gear, and research equipment, employment is contingent upon a driving record acceptable to the College's automobile liability insurer and successful completion of a functional capacity test.
