Geoscientists-in-the-Parks - Diversity Internships GeoCorps America™

The National Park Service’s Geoscientists-in-the-Parks Program in collaboration with The Geological Society of America’s GeoCorps America™ Program is pleased to announce Diversity Internships for fiscal year 2012. The principal goal of the Diversity Internships is to stimulate interest in careers in geoscience research and education among groups historically underrepresented in geoscience professions. This facet of the program introduces participants to careers in the federal government and can help create a federal workforce that better reflects the diverse makeup of the U.S. population. There will be 13 diversity internships available for spring/summer 2012 that are open to all diversity applicants (all NPS GeoCorps/GIP positions offered are shown in Table 1, with the Diversity Internships highlighted in green).

The GeoCorps/ Geoscientists-in-the-Parks Program offers paid, short-term geoscience positions in some of the most beautiful natural areas in the U.S., including national parks, national forests, and BLM lands. Three month positions include a $2,750 stipend (higher for certain positions), housing or housing allowance, and travel assistance. Project areas include geology, hydrology, paleontology, mapping, GIS (Geographic Information Systems), energy and minerals management, soils, glaciology, geo-hazards, cave/karst science, coastal geology, education, and interpretation. Interns will gain on-the-ground, practical work experience and job training, and will build connections with federal agency staff that could result in continued employment with the federal agency. For an overview of the GeoCorps America program, see: http://rock.geosociety.org/g_corps/index.htm.

The Application and Selection Process
The application period for spring and summer positions is December 1 to February 1. Applicants are encouraged to apply on-line for up to three GeoCorps America positions and an unlimited number of Diversity Internships at: http://rock.geosociety.org/g_corps/apply.htm
• Members of groups that have been historically underrepresented in the sciences are strongly encouraged to apply. These groups include, but are not limited to: American Indian or Alaska Native, Black or African-American, Hispanic or Latino, Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander, and persons with disabilities.
• Although geoscience knowledge and skills are a requirement for most positions, students from other disciplines may also apply, such as chemistry, physics, engineering, geographic information systems, mathematics, computer science, ecology, hydrology, meteorology, social sciences, and humanities. Applicants with backgrounds outside of the geosciences should be aware of each position’s qualifications and apply for positions for which they can meet all of the qualifications.
• Once the application period is closed, GSA performs an initial screening of applications and forwards all qualified / eligible applications to the site supervisors. Applicants will be interviewed by phone by the site supervisors approximately one month after the application period closes and final selections will be based on how well the candidates fit the needs of the project. Selected interns will travel to the site and work.
• The Diversity Internships follow Equal Employment Opportunity principles. Selection of positions will be made solely on the basic of merit and qualifications, without regard to race, sex, color, creed, age, marital status, national origin, sexual orientation, non-disqualifying handicap conditions, or any other non-merit factors.

Spring and summer 2012 GeoCorps/Geoscientists-in-the-Parks positions that will be advertised 12/1/11 – 1/31/12. Diversity Internships are shown in green. To apply for these positions go to: http://rock.geosociety.org/g_corps/apply.htm.

The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University invites applications for a full-time post-doctoral research scientist position in polar geophysics and glaciology. The successful candidate will join a group working on a NASA-sponsored interdisciplinary study of the ocean-ice shelf interface in Antarctica and Greenland utilizing Ice Bridge altimeter, radar and gravity data (Ice Bridge a multi-year NASA mission, is the largest airborne survey of Earth's polar ice ever flown that provides data on Arctic and Antarctic ice sheets, ice shelves and sea ice). The post-doctoral research scientist will investigate the effect of warming oceans on floating ice shelves and outlet glaciers to include implications for ice sheet evolution and sea level. The geometry of the base of the ice and the underlying bathymetry that define the cavity in which the ocean interacts with the ice will be determined by geophysical methods. The post-doctoral research scientist will apply oceanographic techniques to utilize this information to define the properties of the water masses, model circulation both seaward of and beneath the ice and to model interactions between the water and the ice.
