2012-2013 William L. Fisher Congressional Geoscience Fellowship

The American Geosciences Institute is accepting applications for next year's William L. Fisher Congressional Geoscience Fellowship. The successful candidate will spend 12 months (starting September 2012) in Washington working as a staff member in the office of a member of Congress or a congressional committee. The fellowship represents a unique opportunity to gain first-hand experience with the federal legislative process and make practical contributions to the effective and timely use of geoscientific knowledge on issues relating to the environment, resources, natural hazards, and federal science policy.

The AGI Fellow will join more than two dozen other scientists and engineers for an intensive orientation program on the legislative and executive branches, organized by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), which also guides the placement process and provides educational and collegial programs for the fellows throughout the year.

The Fisher Endowment

Funding for the fellowship is provided through an endowment recently established by the AGI Foundation to honor William L. Fisher, the Leonidas T. Barrow Centennial Chair in Mineral Resources and Professor at the John A. and Katherine G. Jackson School of Geosciences at the University of Texas, Austin. Fisher served as the inaugural Dean and previously, the Director of the Jackson School. For three decades before that, he was the director of the Bureau of Economic Geology and the state geologist of Texas. At the national level, Fisher served as Assistant Secretary of the Interior for Energy and Minerals under President Ford. Over several administrations, he has been an advisor to the President and to the Secretaries of Energy and the Interior, and he has chaired numerous National Research Council committees and boards. Qualifications and Application Procedures
Prospective applicants should have a broad geoscience background and excellent written and oral communications skills. Minimum requirements are a Master's degree with at least three years of post-degree work experience or a Ph.D. at the time of appointment. Although prior experience in public policy is not necessary, a demonstrable interest in applying science to the solution of public problems is desirable. Applicants must be a member of one of AGI's member societies, a list of which is available at www.agiweb.org/members/index.html

The fellowship carries an annual stipend of up to $65,000 plus allowances for health insurance, relocation, and travel. Additionally, the fellowship includes a possible two to four month extension.

Interested candidates should submit a cover letter, statement of purpose and a curriculum vitae and request three letters of reference. The candidate's cover letter should include an addendum listing your society memberships with membership numbers and the names and contact information of your three references. Assistant Professor - Petroleum Geology - California State University at Bakersfield (CSUB)

Petroleum Geology. The Department of Geological Sciences at California State University at Bakersfield (CSUB) announces a tenure track position at the Assistant Professor level for a geologist specializing in fields relevant to Petroleum Geology beginning in fall 2012. Though the particular expertise is open, applicants who will receive preference will specialize in seismology (as applied to reservoir characterization or fracture propagation), or geochemistry (as applied to hydrocarbons and/or CO2), or geostatistics. potential in sequence stratigraphy, experience in seismic stratigraphy, and the ability to teach at

2) Demonstrated use of seismic reflection data in research.
3) Demonstrated use of state-of-the-art subsurface exploration and production software.
4) Demonstrated ability to teach (a) advanced undergraduate and graduate courses on
sequence stratigraphy, and (b) specialized topics courses.

Siliciclastic Sedimentology/Stratigraphy — We seek candidates who will develop an externally-funded research program in the general area of Siliciclastic Sedimentology/Stratigraphy. This includes but is not limited to one or more of the following research topics: sequence stratigraphy, the sedimentary record of long-term climate change, depositional processes, and diagenesis. We seek applicants with strong potential to collaborate with current faculty as well as potential to interact with the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program and the Berg-Hughes Center for Sedimentary and Petroleum Systems, both of which are housed within the College of Geosciences at Texas A&M.

Reflection Seismology — The successful applicant will establish an active, innovative research program while complementing current departmental strengths in petroleum geology and geophysics, sedimentology, stratigraphy, and structural geology and will participate actively in the Berg-Hughes Center for Petroleum and Sedimentary Systems.
Applicants for both positions must have a Ph.D. at the time of appointment. Post-doctoral research and teaching experience are desirable for each position. Successful applicants will be expected to teach effectively at the undergraduate and graduate levels in their specialty, including classes in the Petroleum Certificate curriculum; supervise undergraduate, M.S. and Ph.D. research, including students who are interested in pursuing careers in the petroleum industry. Position Characteristics: The Department seeks a broadly trained field-oriented geologist whose background and training focuses on Hydrogeology. The successful candidate will join a university-wide cohort of faculty that will develop teaching, research, and outreach initiatives that focus on water quality, technology, and management, including a new interdisciplinary Master's degree in water resource management. Over the next two years, we anticipate appointments in science education, geographic information systems, hydrology, engineering approaches to water management, business approaches to water management and marketing, irrigation technology, environmental journalism, and water and community health. Lower division teaching responsibilities will include introductory geology or environmental science courses. At the upper division and graduate levels, the candidate will be expected to teach Groundwater Hydrogeology, Contaminant Transport and Stream Restoration along with other applied geoscience topics. We are seeking a field-based applicant that will have a background in physical geohydrology and the transport and fate of pollutants in groundwater, as well as an understanding of the water cycle as it applies to industrial, urban and agricultural practices. The department is actively seeking greater involvement in the restoration of the nearby San Joaquin River. Workload is 15 Weighted Teaching Units (WTUs) per semester, generally comprised of 12 instruction WTUs and 3 WTUs of non-instructional responsibilities. In the first year, the College typically reduces the teaching load by 3 or more WTUs per semester to allow extra start-up time for teaching, scholarly work, research, and other professional development efforts. As faculty members progress through their careers, university statistics show that the average instructional load is closer to 9 WTUs per semester, as opposed to the formal expectation of 12, usually through assigned time funded by external grants. The successful candidate may be called upon to teach in a distance education mode and will be encouraged to develop web-enhanced and/or web-based instruction. The position will be filled at the level of Associate Professor or Professor and will carry tenure in the Department of Geosciences. The appointment will begin in August, 2012. The successful individual should have a PhD degree and an outstanding research record in geological and geophysical areas related to petroleum geology. The Department of Geosciences consists of 22 tenured and tenure-track faculty members with a wide range of expertise in sedimentary geology and hydrogeology, geochemistry, geospatial analysis and geography. The department possesses common industry-standard software systems like Petra, Petral and SMT and computing labs for seismic reflection interpretation. There are two isotope laboratories associated with the department. One hosts three isotope ratio mass spectrometers (Delta XP and two Delta Plus IRMS systems) dictated to high-precision analysis of H, C, N and O. The other one hosts a NU Plasma high resolution MC-ICPMS in a 500 sq. ft. clean laboratory dedicated to high-precision analysis of non-traditional isotopes (e.g. Li, Fe and Mg). Several faculty members teach and do research in the Center for Advanced Spatial Technology, where state of the art hardware in Geomatics exists. The director of the center is a Geosciences faculty member. A field class in southwestern Montana has been continuously active since 1982. The teaching and research facilities of the Geosciences Department are currently undergoing multimillion dollar expansion and renovation that will provide state of the art facilities.

This appointment is part of a new initiative within the College of Arts and Sciences to develop an interdisciplinary cluster of faculty, spanning the Departments of Anthropology, Biology, Chemistry, Geology and Mathematics, with research interests that utilize modern genomics or proteomics techniques and methods. The Departments of Geology and Chemistry have particular strengths in evolutionary paleobiology and in mass spectroscopy, and we are interested in building on both of those areas. Natural Resources Professor in Stratigraphy -University of Kentucky

Environmental Geobiology Faculty Position: Kansas State University

The Department of Geology at Kansas State University invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position in Environmental Geobiology, at the rank of Assistant Professor. Compensation is based on the nine-month academic year, although two months summer salary may be negotiated for up to two years. A competitive startup package is available. The position will start no later than August 2012 and may begin earlier if mutually agreeable.

Research Area: A strong background and continued interest in geological processes is required. Preference will be given to candidates with interests in mineral/microbe interaction, microbe/groundwater interactions, bioweathering, and microbial geochemistry. Experience in applying both field-based studies and laboratory bioanalytical procedures to problems in geologic environments is highly desirable. Strong interest in initiating or contributing to interdisciplinary research programs is essential.

Research Expectations: Candidates must have a strong background (at least one degree) in geology or a closely related field, such as geobiology/geomicrobiology, and must have the Ph.D. in hand by the beginning of employment. Some pertinent postdoctoral experience would be desirable but not essential. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a strong, externally funded research program that will complement the research of other faculty members in geology and in related fields across the university. Collaborations with faculty at Kansas State University and other universities and institutions are encouraged.

Other Expectations: Kansas State University is a Land Grant institution, and as such, has a strong teaching mission. Candidates must have excellent teaching skills and a dedication to working with undergraduate as well as graduate students. Although most teaching will be in the classroom, there is an increasing expectation for introducing undergraduates to research as well. Service, although a small part of our expectations, includes committee work and similar sharing of department and university administrative duties, as well as participation in professional societies. Woolpert, Inc. is seeking an Aerial Acquisition Operator in our Dayton, Ohio office to be part of our highly successful flight crew team. The chosen candidate will have the chance to work with the latest remote sensing technology. This position requires and AA/ASin Eng., GIS, Geography, or related field and two (2) years related experience or four (4) years related experience. Previous GIS, Photogrammetry and GPS surveying experience a plus.

Successful candidate will have the opportunity to train in a variety of skill set areas, including GPS surveying, airborne trajectory processing, and remote sensing utilizing aerial film, digital imaging and LiDAR sensors. Frequent travel, willingness/ability to work on-board a twin-engine aircraft are required.

Candidates must be flexible to work weekends, holidays and as needed. Position requires data acquisition for classified areas, therefore candidates must have U.S. citizenship to obtain a secret level security clearance.

GeoCorps Positions Now Available for Fall/Winter 2011-2012!

Interested in doing geoscience in some of America’s most beautiful public lands?

The Geological Society of America (GSA) has posted thirteen new GeoCorps America positions for fall/winter 2011-2012 on the GeoCorps website! Applications can be submitted online from now through July 1, 2011.

Once again, GeoCorps features paid geoscience internships in some of America’s most amazing public lands, which are managed by our partner agencies—the National Park Service, the U.S. Forest Service, and the Bureau of Land Management. This round of projects features some of the nation's premier parks, such as Grand Canyon National Park (AZ), Grand Teton National Park (WY), Yosemite National Park (CA), and Death Valley National Park (CA). It also includes some extremely remote, wild places, like Kenai Fjords National Park (AK) and Wrangell-St. Elias National Park & Preserve (AK), as well as sites closer to an urban setting, such as Catoctin Mountain Park (MD), and Golden Gate National Recreation Area (CA). GeoCorps project areas cover a broad range of subjects, including geology, hydrology, paleontology, mapping , GIS (Geographic Information Systems), minerals, soils, glaciology, geo-hazards, cave/karst science, education, and interpretation.

Benefits
These temporary, paid internships provide on-the-ground geoscience experience and include a $2,750 stipend, free housing (or a housing allowance), and in some cases, a travel allowance.

Eligibility
Geoscientists of all levels are eligible to apply. This includes, but is not limited to, undergraduate students, graduate students, post-docs, professionals, faculty members, teachers, and retirees. Past GeoCorps participants are eligible to apply for any of the “Guest Scientist” positions available this season.
