Assistant Professor in Biogeochemistry - University of Cincinnati

Assistant Professor in Biogeochemistry
The Departments of Geology and Chemistry seek a geoscientist for a tenure-track position in biogeochemistry, with the primary appointment in the Department of Geology. This appointment is part of a new initiative within the College of Arts and Sciences to develop an interdisciplinary cluster of faculty, spanning the Departments of Anthropology, Biology, Chemistry, Geology and Mathematics, with research interests that utilize modern genomics or proteomics techniques and methods. The Departments of Geology and Chemistry have particular strengths in evolutionary paleobiology and in mass spectroscopy, and we are interested in building on both of those areas. The individual appointed will be expected to focus research and teaching on biogeochemical processes indicative of major signposts in the history of life. We particularly encourage applications from scientists with research expertise in one or more of following areas: biomarkers of primitive life forms, characterization of organic by-products in the geologic record, molecular paleontology, molecular phylogenetics using present-day genomes, and the diagenesis and degradation of ancient molecules. Candidates with research and teaching interests in closely related areas are also encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will be expected to generate external funding as part of his/her research program, and help to expand undergraduate and graduate courses of interest to students in the Departments of Geology and Chemistry. The individual will join three recent hires in Geology, two of which are joint with Geography and with Anthropology in a dynamic research group combining methods and resources of these disciplines.

Only online applications will be considered. Applicants should apply online at https://www.jobsatuc.com (search for Position #: 211UC1751) submitting a letter of application, a curriculum vitae, and a short summary of research interests (2-3 pages) and teaching philosophy (1 page), contact details for three references, and should have completed their Ph.D. by July 31, 2012. Complete applications will be reviewed starting October 30, 2011 and the search will remain open until the position is filled. For additional information please e-mail Professor Barry Maynard (Barry.Maynard@ucmail.uc.edu). The University of Cincinnati is an equal opportunity / affirmative action employer. Women, people of color, the disabled, and veterans are encouraged to apply.
