Position Characteristics: The Department seeks a broadly trained field-oriented geologist whose background and training focuses on Hydrogeology. The successful candidate will join a university-wide cohort of faculty that will develop teaching, research, and outreach initiatives that focus on water quality, technology, and management, including a new interdisciplinary Master's degree in water resource management. Over the next two years, we anticipate appointments in science education, geographic information systems, hydrology, engineering approaches to water management, business approaches to water management and marketing, irrigation technology, environmental journalism, and water and community health. Lower division teaching responsibilities will include introductory geology or environmental science courses. At the upper division and graduate levels, the candidate will be expected to teach Groundwater Hydrogeology, Contaminant Transport and Stream Restoration along with other applied geoscience topics. We are seeking a field-based applicant that will have a background in physical geohydrology and the transport and fate of pollutants in groundwater, as well as an understanding of the water cycle as it applies to industrial, urban and agricultural practices. The department is actively seeking greater involvement in the restoration of the nearby San Joaquin River. Workload is 15 Weighted Teaching Units (WTUs) per semester, generally comprised of 12 instruction WTUs and 3 WTUs of non-instructional responsibilities. In the first year, the College typically reduces the teaching load by 3 or more WTUs per semester to allow extra start-up time for teaching, scholarly work, research, and other professional development efforts. As faculty members progress through their careers, university statistics show that the average instructional load is closer to 9 WTUs per semester, as opposed to the formal expectation of 12, usually through assigned time funded by external grants. The successful candidate may be called upon to teach in a distance education mode and will be encouraged to develop web-enhanced and/or web-based instruction. Outcomes assessment and service learning are important components of the university curriculum. Specific assignments will depend on departmental needs. The successful candidate will be expected to work cooperatively with faculty and staff in the department and college.

Academic Preparation: An earned doctorate (Ph.D.) in a field of Hydrogeology or related Earth Sciences field is required for appointment to a tenure track position. Qualifying degrees must be from an accredited institution or foreign equivalent.

Teaching Or Other Experience: Preference will be given to candidates with post-doctoral research or teaching experience. Candidates are expected to demonstrate a commitment to or potential for teaching excellence, research, and scholarly activities, including successful grantsmanship and research publications. The successful candidate must have the ability to work effectively with faculty, staff and students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds. The University is committed to promoting the success of all, and to reducing the barriers to success related to differences in areas such as race, ethnicity, culture, disability, and more. Candidates who can contribute to that goal are encouraged to apply and identify their strengths and experiences in this area.
