Maurice F. Storm Endowed Chair in Petroleum Geology



The Department of Geosciences at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville is seeking applications for the inaugural appointment to the Maurice F. Storm Endowed Chair in Petroleum Geology. The position will be filled at the level of Associate Professor or Professor and will carry tenure in the Department of Geosciences. The appointment will begin in August, 2012. The successful individual should have a PhD degree and an outstanding research record in geological and geophysical areas related to petroleum geology. All PhD requirements completed at the time of the appointment. The successful applicant is also expected to develop courses in petroleum geosciences. The individual will serve as a nucleus for the development of an energy-related program of international caliber that liaises with the petroleum industry through the development of his or her externally funded research program. A commitment to excellence in teaching and a willingness to supervise students at both the MS and PhD level is critical.



The Department of Geosciences consists of 22 tenured and tenure-track faculty members with a wide range of expertise in sedimentary geology and hydrogeology, geochemistry, geospatial analysis and geography. The department possesses common industry-standard software systems like Petra, Petral and SMT and computing labs for seismic reflection interpretation. There are two isotope laboratories associated with the department. One hosts three isotope ratio mass spectrometers (Delta XP and two Delta Plus IRMS systems) dictated to high-precision analysis of H, C, N and O. The other one hosts a NU Plasma high resolution MC-ICPMS in a 500 sq. ft. clean laboratory dedicated to high-precision analysis of non-traditional isotopes (e.g. Li, Fe and Mg). Several faculty members teach and do research in the Center for Advanced Spatial Technology, where state of the art hardware in Geomatics exists. The director of the center is a Geosciences faculty member. A field class in southwestern Montana has been continuously active since 1982. The teaching and research facilities of the Geosciences Department are currently undergoing multimillion dollar expansion and renovation that will provide state of the art facilities.



The University of Arkansas is a nationally competitive, student centered research university and is the flagship campus of the University of Arkansas system. The Department of Geosciences offers bachelors and masters degrees in geology and geography. A PhD degree in Geosciences has been approved at the campus level and will be implemented in the fall of 2012.
