Research Scientist - Polar Geophysics - Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University

Post Doctoral Research Scientist in the field of Polar Geophysics:

The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University invites applications for a full-time post-doctoral research scientist position in polar geophysics and glaciology. The successful candidate will join a group working on a NASA-sponsored interdisciplinary study of the ocean-ice shelf interface in Antarctica and Greenland utilizing Ice Bridge altimeter, radar and gravity data (Ice Bridge a multi-year NASA mission, is the largest airborne survey of Earth's polar ice ever flown that provides data on Arctic and Antarctic ice sheets, ice shelves and sea ice). The post-doctoral research scientist will investigate the effect of warming oceans on floating ice shelves and outlet glaciers to include implications for ice sheet evolution and sea level. The geometry of the base of the ice and the underlying bathymetry that define the cavity in which the ocean interacts with the ice will be determined by geophysical methods. The post-doctoral research scientist will apply oceanographic techniques to utilize this information to define the properties of the water masses, model circulation both seaward of and beneath the ice and to model interactions between the water and the ice. The position may involve field work in both Greenland and Antarctica. Candidates with research interests in polar oceanography and glaciology are encouraged to apply. The position is a full-time 2-year appointment, with the opportunity of continuation and growth depending on progress and availability of funding.

Requirements: A recent Ph.D. in Oceanography, Geophysics or a related discipline is required.
